In a wood crusher, the screen is a critical component; it acts as a gatekeeper that controls the size of the output, with the aperture (hole) size directly determining the characteristics of the wood chips.
The comparison in the image illustrates this clearly: a 20 mm screen produces small wood chunks, whereas a 16 mm screen yields much finer material-light, golden-hued, thin, flake-like fragments that form a loose, airy pile. It is common for people to confuse "16 mm" with "16 mesh" (a measurement indicating 16 openings per inch); in this context, "16 mm" refers specifically to a screen aperture size of 16 millimeters.
A 16 mm screen is a "standard" choice for wood crushers. The wood chips produced with this screen are generally around 10 mm in size-thin, flake-like, and slightly angular at the edges. They are noticeably finer than the output from a 20 mm screen, appearing loose and fluffy rather than compacted. Because the aperture is relatively large, the machine achieves a higher throughput, resulting in greater production capacity and a lower risk of the screen becoming clogged.
This type of screen is suitable for a wide range of applications. Whether you are producing biomass fuel, manufacturing particleboard, preparing substrate logs for mushroom cultivation, creating bedding for livestock, or processing additives for organic fertilizer, a 16mm output size is ideal.
Furthermore, this particle size is well-suited for any subsequent fine-grinding processes; it is neither so fine that it complicates further pulverization, nor so coarse that it risks jamming downstream equipment.
Please note that a screen should not simply be installed and forgotten. It requires regular inspection-if it becomes deformed by stones or if the apertures have worn too large, it must be replaced. Otherwise, the output size will exceed specifications, making it difficult to maintain control over subsequent production stages.
